321 vs 392 questions for my particular use Tldr. The 321 was a bighorn 2wd while the 392 was a 4x4 with off-road tires built-to-serve edition. So a truck with optional 373 gears will tow a heavier trailer than one with 355 or 321.
For my application does the gear ratio even matter. But even then the 321 wont leave you stranded. From what I have read the 321 has better fuel mileage.
It appears from the numbers you posted an 8 speed with a 321 has better torque multiplication than a 6 speed with a 355 or even 373 all the way up to 6th gear to gear. It isnt until 7th gear that the 321 would be worse then a 373 in 5th gear. The engine will either be the 57L V8 or the 30L Ecodiesel.
I drove trucks with both gear ratios. If you do the math you will see the 321 tows in 7th gear with towhaul and the overall ratiorpms are nearly identical to the 392 in 8th gear. Sure you get a higher tow rating with the 392 but if you are pushing the towing limit you are probably over the payload.
On the Ram 1500 lineup there are three available axle ratios 321 355 and 392. My 321 is delivering very good fuel economy so far. Likewise for 321 gears 5-6 and 392 gears 6-7.

I am in the market for a new Ram 1500 and I have to make on the gear ratio. Max tow rating for the 321 rear axle is 8150 and for the 392 is 11250. The base axle ratio on 42 gas trucks is 321 44 gas trucks is 355 and the biggest axle ratio on 44 or 42 gas trucks is 392.
Was wondering if the 321 is enough to tow an Elite II. Seems 392 is too much and 321 is to little IMHO.
